A Belle Favorite: The Veterans' Dance

As a Distinguished Belle in the Philanthropy office, I spent most of my time during the first few weeks of school talking with prospective Belles during the 2014 Fall Bruin Belles recruitment. The most common question from these possible future Belles was “What is your favorite Belles event?” Each time I was asked this question, the answer came effortlessly. My favorite event is the quarterly dance at the West Los Angeles Veterans’ Hospital. The hospital hosts a Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and Spring dance. Belles are given the opportunity to attend the dance and interact with the veterans. This is my favorite event because (aside from absolutely loving to dance), I really enjoy spending time with the veterans and hearing their stories. I am so honored to be able to give my time to those who have given so much to our country. Seeing their smiles as we all dance along to everything from the Jackson 5 to Pitbull is a wonderful reminder of why I love Belles! I cannot wait to attend all the future dances!

The Bruin Belles Community

When asked what Bruin Belles is all about, we summarize our focus on community service and women’s leadership, as we are united under these integral fundamentals. Yet, the experience of Bruin Belles extends far beyond those five words. Bruin Belles as an organization and the Belles in it are incredibly well-rounded. Attending community service events, campus sports and arts events, and women’s leadership events throughout every quarter connects Belles to fellow Belles, fellow students, the UCLA community, and the Los Angeles community at large. What I Didn't Know

  What I didn't know The morning after I got the highly anticipated call that I got into Bruin Belles, I found this bell (figure 1) on my dorm door: a door belle…get it? I can still very clearly remember the few weeks surrounding this moment. I wanted it SO BADLY! When I saw the Belles tri-fold at the enormous activities fair, I knew immediately that I needed to be a part of that community. On paper, it sounded like everything I wanted: a group of likeminded passionate women who did community service together and other social events. I worked tirelessly on my application and was so nervous for my interview that I signed up for the very first slot (Monday at 8am… yikes). I got the long-awaited call late on a Friday night.
